Functional Vision Examination

Sensorimotor Examination

At Prosper Family Eyecare and Vision Development Center, our Sensorimotor Exam is a comprehensive assessment designed to evaluate your visual function and binocular coordination. This exam is essential for patients of all ages, from children to seniors, as it helps identify potential visual issues that can affect daily activities, learning, and overall quality of life.

What is a Sensorimotor Exam?

A Sensorimotor Exam focuses on the interaction between your visual system and motor skills. It assesses how well your eyes work together (binocular function) and how effectively your brain processes visual information.

Key Components of the Exam:

  • Binocular Vision Assessment: We evaluate how your eyes work together to create a single, clear image. This is crucial for depth perception and coordination.

  • Visual Function Testing: We examine various aspects of your vision, including clarity, focusing, fatigue, color perception, and visual fields.

  • Sensorimotor Skills Evaluation: Our team assesses how well your visual system integrates with motor skills, which is vital for activities such as reading, sports, and driving.

Why is the Sensorimotor Exam Important?

  • Identifying Learning Difficulties: Many children with visual processing issues may struggle in school. Early detection through our Sensorimotor Exam can lead to timely intervention and support.

  • Evaluating Visual Function Post-Injury: The Sensorimotor Exam is essential for assessing visual function after a traumatic brain injury (TBI), even if the injury occurred years ago. Many individuals may experience lingering visual disturbances that impact their daily life. Early evaluation allows for targeted interventions that can improve overall functioning and quality of life.

  • Improving Quality of Life: For adults, visual issues can affect work performance and daily tasks, such as driving. Understanding your visual function can help us recommend effective solutions to enhance your visual experience.

  • Tailored Solutions for All Ages: Whether it’s for a child struggling with reading or an adult experiencing vision problems, our comprehensive exam can lead to personalized treatment plans to improve visual function.

Visual Processing

Key Components of Perceptual Testing (Visual Processing)

Perceptual testing involves assessing various areas of visual processing, each critical for different aspects of daily life. This testing is appropriate for all ages and is recommended for any child that is struggling in school. It can take up to one hour to complete testing.

Eye Conditions and Challenges that Can Be Detected

Perceptual testing can reveal underlying issues that may not be apparent during a standard eye exam. Some of the conditions it can detect include:

  • Learning-Related Vision Problems: Difficulties with reading, comprehension, and focus that can mimic or exacerbate learning disabilities like dyslexia or ADHD.

  • Strabismus: Misalignment of the eyes that affects depth perception and can lead to double vision or suppressed vision in one eye.

  • Amblyopia (Lazy Eye): Reduced vision in one eye that can interfere with visual processing.

  • Convergence Insufficiency: Difficulty focusing on close-up tasks, leading to eye strain and headaches.

  • Visual Processing Disorders: Issues in how the brain interprets visual input, affecting academic and functional performance.

Benefits of Perceptual Testing

Perceptual testing provides a variety of benefits for individuals of all ages, making it an essential tool for addressing vision-related challenges. One of the most significant advantages is improved academic performance. By identifying and addressing visual processing issues, students can enhance their focus, comprehension, and overall confidence in their learning abilities, leading to better outcomes in the classroom.

Additionally, perceptual testing strengthens motor skills by improving hand-eye coordination. This development benefits a wide range of activities, including writing, sports, and everyday tasks that require precision and coordination.

Another critical benefit is increased confidence. By resolving vision-related challenges, individuals often experience greater success in school, work, and recreational activities, which helps boost their self-esteem and overall sense of achievement.

Finally, perceptual testing facilitates the early detection of vision-related issues. Identifying problems at an early stage enables targeted interventions, preventing long-term complications and ensuring better outcomes for individuals as they grow and develop.

Visual Vestibular Testing

Vision and balance are tightly related. They work together to maintain balance and spatial orientation. We offer a form of videonystagmography(VNG) testing, which allows us to assess and identify abnormalities within the vestibular system, oculomotor system and cranial nerves. This is performed with a VR headset that tracks eyes movements. In addition, we can assess balance and posture stability with the eyes open, closed and in different head positions.
